Quick Tips for Practicing Safe Surfing Habits

When it comes to spyware defense, prevention can be just as important as elimination. If you are getting spyware on your computer, start practing these habits today.

1. Exercise extreme caution when using social networking websites. If you are getting solicitations from someone you do not know, be extremely careful clicking any links. Guys – despite how handsome you may be, if you are getting love letters from beautiful girls you have never seen before, it’s probably too good to be true.

2. Do not download .exe or video files that require a “codec” from any P2P networks. This is one of the most common ways spyware can attack- from downloading files through a peer to peer file sharing program. Stick to the mp3’s and the AVI’s. Avoid any video files that requires a codec.

3. Use the FireFox web browser. Although Internet Explorer has made strides in present years, they are still woefully behind in web browsing protection. FireFox comes built in with many different options to keep your computer safe. Since I started using it, pop up ads have become a distant memory.

4. Have your firewall running at all times! Those of you with Vista and the latest updates from XP should have your firewall running automatically. To check if your firewall is running to go Control Panel, Windows Security Center, and click Windows Firewall.

5. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, download a real time spyware protection program! Typically a spyware program with ActiveX installed can provide real time protection against any new spyware threats. This along with your firewall should be constantly running in your background. To download a spyware program with ActiveX please visit Spyware Fix.
